Air
The part of the Elemental Equity fund “Air” supports activities which aim to restore a healthy balance of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere. Your investment goes directly towards planting native subtropical thicket species (primarily the carbon thirsty spekboom, (Portulacaria afra) which stores carbon dioxide (considered a key factor in accelerating climate change) in the soil and biomass as well as rehabilitating degraded land by increasing vegetation cover.
Not only carbon is stored and vegetation increased when supporting Air; the ground water table will be restored by a better infiltration from water in to soil, less erosion will occur in the area. With this better infiltration, a more constant water flow to water catchments will make sure surrounded areas in the Eastern Cape will be able to make use of a bigger water supply. Also, work is provided to the “poorest of the poor”; planting Spekboom will create jobs for people from communities in and around the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve.
Different types of investments can be done to support the element Air:
€ 0 – € 500; Green Household Investment
Investors will receive proof of payment with a map of the planting site and information about carbon sequestration through planting Spekboom.
€ 500 – € 5000; Green Travel Investment
Investors will receive a scientific certificate with maps of the planting site and, information about carbon sequestration specific to their investment. A completion report will be sent to the investor after planting and monitoring. The investor will be publicised on the Elemental Equity website (if desired).
€ 5000 and above; Green Company Investment
Investors will receive a scientific certificate with maps of the planting site, pictures from the specific planting site and information about carbon sequestration specific to their investment. A completion report will be sent to the investor after planting and monitoring which contains details about the amount of carbon sequestrated in the planting site. Two years after planting, an update, performed by Rhodes University, will be sent to the investor with the growth rates of the planted Spekboom. The investor will be publicised on the Elemental Equity website (if desired) and will feature in the Seasonal Supplement newsletter (a joint EarthCollective-Living Lands publication)
