About

Elemental Equity provides a simple, direct and transparent way for you (and anyone you know) to ‘green your footprint’ and join in with positive action for sustainability.

Elemental Equity is a charitable fund utilizing donations and in-kind contributions from individuals and corporate social responsibility actions to invest in people (social capital) and environment (natural capital) across the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve, South Africa.

The concept adopts an ‘elements’ approach in simply getting back to basics with something we all understand. The investment themes of ‘Air’, ‘Water’, ‘Earth’ & ‘Fire’ provide a unified way to support improvements in climate (CO2 capture), water, biodiversity (flora & fauna) and renewable energy alternatives.

The on-ground activities across these themes support landscape restoration activities being carried out through PRESENCE: a collaborative multi-stakeholder network supporting the restoration and conservation of the region’s ‘living landscapes’.

Elemental Equity aims to upscale restoration implementation and enable the feasible expansion of activities onto private and communal land where desirable.  The fund engages teams previously trained through South African Government’s successful ‘Working for Water’ programme: a poverty-relief initiative with social and ecological objectives.  Along with sister initiatives (Working for Wetlands, Working for Woodlands and Working on Fire), Elemental Equity provides a ‘bridge’ for teams who have completed their governmental contract and are seeking to enter the private sector with their newly acquired skills in landscape restoration. Your investment supports this incentive scheme (Elemental Earnings) for rewarding the communities, land-owners and contracted teams helping to sustainably manage our landscapes*.

Elemental Equity seeks to ensure natural integrity, economic viability and social equity in across the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve now and in the future. Learn more about the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve here.

* This type of incentive programme is also known as Payments for Ecosystem Services. This is where the beneficiaries of the services provided by healthy ecosystems provide (usually tangible) compensation to the ‘stewards’ or ‘custodians’ of the environment who are responsible for conserving and restoring these elements of healthy landscapes / ecosystems which provide benefit to others.
